"Serbia's WTO membership inevitable"

Serbia's entry to WTO is an inevitable requirement for closing Chapter 30. In order to join, Serbia has to lift a ban on trade in genetically modified food, it was noted.

However, the EU's standards imply the strict control of trade, production and use of GM products, because the bloc attaches special importance to consumer protection, the chief negotiator said.

Serbia is close to fulfilling its obligations in the process of accession to WTO but some open issues in bilateral talks still remain, as does aligning the law on genetically modified organisms (GMOs) to the organization's rules, Assistant Minister of Trade Bojana Todorovic said on Tuesday.

"It can be said that we have gone through 90 percent of that process. Some open issues remain in bilateral talks because the accession also implies bilateral talks and aligning laws to WTO rules. Those are set rules and we cannot change them," Todorovic told Tanjug.

Todorovic, who is also the deputy head of the negotiation team's Chapter 30 Work Group, said that Serbia must amend its GMO law because it does not comply with WTO rules.

It is no longer in compliance with WTO rules and it, too, must be aligned to WTO and EU rules to complete the process, she said.
