UNHCR to reinforce humanitarian action in Serbia

Resident UN Coordinator Irena Vojackova-Sollorano and UNHCR Chief in Serbia Hans Friedrich Schodder are concerned over Hungary's border shutdown and aggravated weather conditions.

In case a bottleneck is created on the Serbia-Hungary border, we will elevate the humanitarian response of the entire UN system in the country to a new level, Vojackova-Sollorano said.

She expressed concern that refugees may stay in the territory of Serbia longer and be more exposed to exploitation by smugglers and other criminals as they pursue their path towards safety in western and northern Europe.

UNHCR estimated that over 12,000 refugees from Syria and other war-afflicted countries are currently staying in Serbia at any given moment.
