This especially true "because after September 15 the Hungarian government will adopt a law stipulating that those crossing the border illegally will be jailed for five years," said Vucic.

"What is it that we need to do? We want to act in a European manner, make our contribution and assume our part of responsibility. We are not running away from the responsibility, but the EU needs to tell us what our responsibilities are," Vucic said after visiting the reception center for migrants in Kanjiza, on the Serbian border with Hungary, with Bavarian State Minister for European Affairs Beate Merk.

The prime minister also stated that the migrants do not want to stay in Serbia, that most of them who are in Kanjiza at the moment arrived on Thursday morning and just want to leave. "We cannot force anyone to stay, but I fear what will happen with these people after September 15," Vucic stressed.

Beate Merk on Thursday praised Serbia for its responsible treatment of migrants.

I see that Serbia is doing everything to give those people a roof over their heads and provide security to them while they are here, as well as food and the ability to communicate, Merk said at the reception centre in Kanjiza, a town on the Hungarian border that she was visiting with Aleksandar Vucic.

She said that the refugee crisis is affecting both Serbia and EU member states equally.

Two days ago, we had 2,500 new refugees in Munich, which is an enormous challenge for our authorities and police, and for that reason we demand that all EU member states be ready to receive the people who are fleeing, rather than leave that to just a number of member states, Merk said.

At the meeting - already their fourth this year - Merk and Vucic discussed European integration and the success recently achieved in the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue, as well as the IMF's assessment, all of which, as Merk said, speaks of Serbia's success
