Serb List: Civil Defense is not "parallel structure"

The Serb-run Civil Defense in northern Kosovo and Metohija has never been a parallel structure, the Srpska (Serb) List has stated.

Serb List: Civil Defense is not "parallel structure"

The Pristina government's plan is "a clumsy attempt to set a less important issue as a priority, which should be resolved through full consensus and political agreement, " said a statement signed by Serb List President Aleksandar Jablanovic.

It added that Civil Defense always acts responsibly in life-threatening conditions and situations when safety of the citizens is endangered, when it comes to fires, floods or road maintenance in winter.

Jablanovic underlined that the Civil Defense is not organized as a security structure, nor has ever operated as such.

The future of the Civil Defense is guaranteed by the Brussels agreement, which specifies that members of this service will be sent to other institutions established by the interim authorities in Kosovo and Metohija, in order to serve the citizens using their experience and expertise, Jablanovic pointed out.

According to him, Edita Tahiri, minister without portfolio in charge of dialogue with Belgrade - once again found it appropriate to "collect political points by misleading citizens and presenting half-truths in the media, doing all this from the official position of a minister."

The Pristina-based Albanian language daily Koha Ditore reported earlier on Wednesday that the Kosovo government decided to disband the Civil Protection "that acted as a parallel security structure in the municipalities in northern Kosovo."

The Serbian Government's Office for Kosovo and Metohija reacted to the news carried by Tanjug to post on its Twitter account, "Pristina (acts) ambitiously and outside all of its jurisdiction. What's next - they'll be choosing the mayor of Sydney?"
