U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland voiced support for Serbia along the path toward full membership in the EU.

Nuland, Pajtic: Opposition important for oversight of gov't

In the meeting with Nuland, Pajtic reiterated his party's commitment to EU integration, and highlighted the importance of opening Chapters 23 (judiciary and fundamental rights) and 24 (justice, freedom and security) in negotiations with the EU, as that would contribute to Serbia's democratization and reform process.

In the release issued by the DS after the meeting with Nuland, Pajtic mentioned as the biggest challenges facing the country along the EU path - the lack of full freedom of the media, cases of human rights violations and pressures on independent institutions.

He voiced the concern over the atmosphere in which the next local and provincial elections would be carried out, noting that several snap local elections had seen dozens of incidents targeting DS members.

Leaders of the Social Democratic Party Boris Tadic and the League of the Social Democrats of Vojvodina Nenad Canak also took part in the meeting with Nuland.
