Nikolic: Serbia committed to European path

President Tomislav Nikolic said Thursday at a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Belgrade that Serbia is fully committed to the European path.

Nikolic: Serbia committed to European path

The citizens of Serbia feel the fatigue and need motivation along the path of EU integration, the Serbian president noted.

Speaking about the regional cooperation, Nikolic stressed that the relations in the region are excellent, of which Serbia is very proud. Serbia is not a source of instability in the Balkans and shows restraint in the face of provocations, the president's media relations office said in a release.

Nikolic pointed out that the economic relations between the two countries are excellent.

“Germany is among the largest donors in Serbia and we are very thankful for that,” said Nikolic.

Merkel commended on Thursday, in the meeting with Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic, Serbia's efforts to accede to the EU.

What you have said about Serbia being on a solid path toward the EU is very good, and we have to take into account citizens' fatigue concerning EU integration, the president's press service cited Merkel as saying.

Speaking about security challenges facing Europe, Merkel said that Germany is trying to ensure that the propaganda of Islamic extremists does not destabilize the region.

There is a danger of Muslim extremists exerting influence on Muslims in Bosnia-Herzegovina and destabilizing Europe, the chancellor underlined.

Merkel said that she would like to discuss the situation in the Balkans with the Serbian president again, because, as she put it, he knows the situation in that region very well, notes the release.
