Serbian president receives German chancellor

Nikolic received Merkel in the Palace of Serbia, where a meeting between the delegations of the two countries is under way, reported the state broadcaster RTS.

Nikolic's media service said in a statement that during the meeting, he would tell Merkel of his satisfaction with the exceptionally good bilateral relations between Serbia and Germany, including economic cooperation.

"The president will ask the German chancellor for support for opening (EU membership negotiations) chapters and express Serbia's desire for the negotiating process to gain greater dynamic, including the opening of negotiation chapters during this and next year," the statement said.

It further stated that "beside the differing views regarding the problem of Kosovo and Metohija, the two countries have no open bilateral issues."

"Germany is (Serbia's) second European trade partner with 3.2 billion euros of exchange with a trend of steady growth, which is expected to be around five percent per year. 370 large German companies currently operate in the Serbian market, and the arrival of Lidl and Tonnies is a signal that Serbia is an extremely attractive destination for German investors," it was said in the statement.

It added that the general stance of the German companies doing business in Serbia is that they are basically satisfied so far, while as many as 87 percent of them would invest in Serbia again, said the president's media office.

"In the coming period Serbia should continue the initiated cooperation with German companies in the automotive industry and suppliers of the automotive industry, energy, transport and railways, but also establish cooperation with companies that have already offered training of our personnel in electronics, mechanical engineering and solar energy," the statement said.

Germany has also been the largest European donor in Serbia over the past decade, it noted, specifying that the country has allocated about half a billion euros to assist Serbia.
