"Building fence no solution," minister, UN official agree

"We will continue to act in accordance with the law and therefore we asked for the EU and UN's assistance," Stefanovic told a press conference on the occasion of marking June 20 - World Refugee Day.

He pointed out that the Serbian police have so far arrested dozens of human traffickers and seized hundreds of vehicles, but are absolutely powerless when it comes to the wave of refugees.

Stefanovic also said that this year around 30,000 people sought asylum in Serbia in less than six months, adding there are 1.5 million refugees on the border between Turkey and Syria.

Schodder stressed that erecting fences to stop the flow of refugees is not the solution, as they would be forced to turn to smugglers and criminals seeking other routes, and called for regular and organized protection and respect for the rights of refugees.
