The Beta agency also quoted Stefanovic as saying that the MUP "did not receive an official request."A military helicopter that was eventually dispatched to carry out the task crashed in Belgrade, killing all seven people on board.
Stefanovic specified that the head of the Police Administration in Novi Pazar had asked the commander of MUP's helicopter unit if they had an aircraft at their disposal that could transport a baby for treatment under nighttime conditions.
"The commander, who is a professional and makes these decisions, said that the task could not be carried out because our helicopters are not adequate for such conditions," the minister said.
Stefanovic also "stressed that the prosecution should be allowed to complete its work related to the investigation of the crash," and that "political parties should stay out of it."
"The prosecution is doing its job and will give the final word. It would be harmful if any of the political parties were to interfere with a criminal investigation," he said.
Stefanovic added that the ruling Progressives (SNS) "do not wish to interfere in the investigation of an independent state organ that is acting autonomously in any way."
Asked if this means the SNS will not ask defense and health ministers to resign, Steganovic said this was "a conclusion made by journalists," and repeated that "the SNS will not interfere in the prosecutorial investigation."
In an earlier statement for the state broadcaster RTS, Defense Minister Bratislav Gasic said that the Health Center in Novi Pazar first turned to the MUP, but that the police advised them that "only the Army can help them."
