"Easy to respond to provocation with provocation"
"People who are synonymous with an unchangeable Croatian attitude towards Serbs, and an invariably bad attitude, appear among the administration's advisers..." Nikolic said."There are many Croats who understood what our common goal and path and future is, with whom we can work together extraordinarily, but you see, people show up who are chained to the past and who would like Croatia to commit another one of its, as they say, brilliant operations, and be left completely without Serbs," "Nikolic said.
The Serbian president added that "some people from the Croatia have slept through this whole time," stating that "pressures are today almost as obvious as they had been sometime in the early 1990s" - but added the circumstances are now different with Croatia joining the EU and "absolutely under obligation to respect all the rights that it must provide to all its citizens."
He told the delegation that "Serbia is trying to ensure that they and their parents can live in Croatia in peace, even if that means we will not make all the complaints about Croatia that we should."
"Sometimes it seems to some people in Serbia that we are too meek or do not dare to respond - the easiest way is to respond to provocations with provocations," Nikolic said and "warned that this is doing nobody, not even them, any service."
He added that Croatia joined the EU along with "major shortcomings in relation to, above all, the expelled Serbs, their property, their rights," and that Serbia "did not make problems out of this with other countries" by insisting that Croatia must first "solve all the problems of Serbs that can be solved.
"But now it's time to talk openly talk and we will discuss openly with Croatian the absolute respect of all the agreements we have achieved and all obligations that Croatia as a state has toward Serbs," said Nikolic.
According to him, "Serbia depends quite a bit on the international community" in this, adding that "otherwise, if we and Croats solved problems ourselves, they would never be resolved and would not be resolved well."
He told the young Serbs from Croatia that "Serbia will invest more than before in their full development in all fields."
"Serbia will maintain good relations with Croatia continuously, in good faith, convinced this is the only way to solve all the problems... You have seen that we are no longer the ones whose statements require reaction, it is mostly Croatian officials to whose statements the EU reacts and warns that is not what we agreed to, when we reached agreements" - Nikolic was quoted as saying.
