Party collecting signatures against anti-Russian sanctions

Popovic on Thursday in Belgrade signed the petition and told reporters that Serbia imposing sanctions on Russia would mean "turning its back in its closest and most loyal friend."

He also noted that such a move, "demanded from Serbia by the European Parliament," would harm the country's political and economic interests, "although it would perhaps be in the interest of some other countries."

Russia is the greatest protector of Serbia's national and state interests, he added, especially when it comes to Kosovo and the Serb Republic, but also "the greatest sponsor of our vital economic interests."

"As Russia has always stood with Serbia during the hardest times in the past centuries, so Serbia and its citizens today must show solidarity with Russia's citizens," Popovic, a former government official and a former official and MP of the DSS party, said.

The signing of the petition was organized near the monument in Belgrade to Russian Tsar Nicholas II and attracted a large number of citizens. Representatives of the Russian embassy and of the Society of Serbian-Russian Friendship were also present.

The campaign will continue throughout Serbia and once a sufficient number of signatures has been collected, the SNP said the petition would be submitted to the National Assembly.
