Poll: Opposition has support of 20 pct of voters

If an election were to be held in Serbia today, the only opposition party to get over the threshold on its own would be the Democratic Party (DS), which is supported by 6.6 percent of the people, according to a survey by the agency Faktor Plus.

Head of the agency Vladimir Pejic told Danas the DS had the most realistic chances of all the opposition parties of crossing the election threshold, regardless of the party's internal issues.

The Social Democratic Party (SDS) of former president of Serbia Boris Tadic is close to the threshold and could potentially crossit with a more active campaign. The Serb Radical Party (SRS) is also close to 5 percent, and the Dveri Movement also have a chance to succeed on their own, but together with the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS), that success would be certain, Pejic pointed out.

The survey conducted less than a month ago says that 4.5 percent of voters support the SDS, 4.6 percent support the SRS and 3.9 percent would vote for Dveri.

The DSS, now that several groups have left the party, enjoys support from 1.1 percent of the people surveyed, while the Liberal Democratic Party can count on support from 1 percent of the people.

The SNS is the preferred party of more than 50 percent of the people, according to the survey, while the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) would get 11 percent of the votes in case of an election.

Program Director of the Center for Free Elections and Democracy (CESID) Djordje Vukovic told Danas that the main problem of the opposition was its lack of unity.

The parties of the opposition have distanced themselves from each other more than from the government, which has caused them to lose votes, Vukovic noted.
