Dacic reelected as leader of Socialists

After the election, Dacic said that the Socialists were facing a new stage in the efforts to boost the country’s development and make changes in society and the goal of the party was to win a million votes in the next elections as that was its real strength.

Dacic pointed out in his speech that everything that the Socialists had done to change themselves and society was not enough, as a huge amount of work was still ahead of them.

“The country is devastated, looted, destroyed,” Dacic said, stressing that the Socialists joined the government with the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) to fight for reforms and an economically equitable and modern Serbia.

He said that the current government had achieved three great successes in the two and a half years of its work – it started serious internal reforms, opened EU accession negotiations and improved the country’s position on the international stage.

As a guest of the Congress, Prime Minister and President of the Serbian Progressive Party Aleksanadar Vucic said that he expected the Socialists to continue supporting the implementation of reforms and added that he believed they could do much for the country together.

Milorad Dodik, president of the Serb Republic (RS) and the ruling Alliance of Independent Social Democrats, said that the Serb entity in Bosnia "wanted a modern, strong and happy Serbia."

“We in the RS do not need anything else from you but to make a strong Serbia so that we can survive in Bosnia-Herzegovina,” said Dodik.

The SPS, about 200,000-strong, was founded in July 1990 and has been in power since its setting up until the fall of its founder and leader, former Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic, after which it went into opposition following first parliamentary elections.

Following Milosevic's death in the detention unit of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, Ivica Dacic became new party leader in December 2006.
