Italy offers "strong support" for EU bid

“Italy is a very important partner for Serbia and it would like to see a good signal sent from Brussels to Serbia during its EU presidency,” Joksimović told Tanjug after the talks in Rome with Senator Benedetto Della Vedova, state secretary at Italy's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Armando Varrichio, diplomatic advisor to the Italian prime minister.

“I believe that by year's end we will have if not the opening of a chapter (in the negotiating talks) than at least the announcement that this will be done in foreseeable future,” Joksimović said, adding that the countries' prime ministers are expected to meet by the end of Italy's EU presidency.

“Once again we have expressed expectation and belief that the EU should recognize the effort that Serbia is making in the reform process and also what has been done in the dialogue between Belgrade and Priština,” she said.

“We have done a lot in all fields and we believe that it is no longer the moment when we should beg for the opening of chapters, but rather the one when Serbia's progress should be recognized and valued,” Joksimović said.

The support of Italy and few other countries is useful not only for Serbia, but also the EU, regardless of the messages whether or not the enlargement process will continue in five years, Joksimović said.

“This is not that important, it is important that we are heading in the good direction and that we are not doing what we are doing only to join the EU - this is only an additional goal that makes us speed up the reform process. It is crucial for us to manage the country in a way that would ensure better lives for all citizens,” Joksimović said.

“When you ask our citizens where they would like to live, they usually name some of the EU countries. Since this is the case, we should speed up the reform process,” the Serbian minister said.

Italy offers strong support to Serbia on its EU pathway, and it is one of the greatest advocates of further enlargement of the Union, she said.

Italy is also particularly interested in the Western Balkan region, Joksimović said.
