"Serbia should harmonize policy with EU"

As for the countries negotiating to join the EU, Kocijančić said they must "gradually until they join as members" align their policies to comply with the foreign policy of the organization.

"I have no special comment on the relations between Serbia and Russia," she said and again pointed to a statement she made ahead of the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Belgrade, that Serbia is "a candidate negotiating with the EU on membership and it is expected that this pro-European commitment for the future of Serbia will be clearly expressed during this visit."

Kocijančič made this statement when asked by a reported whether there was a framework within which "Serbia would be allowed" to implement agreements with Russia, such as the one signed on Thursday on cooperation in agriculture and on exporting cars from Serbia to Russia.

Reporters also asked whether all countries in the European integration process should impose sanctions on Russia "as Montenegro has already done."

Kocijančič responded by saying that it was "proper that all the countries that have signed agreements on stabilization and association with the EU, in the framework of the European perspective, committed to gradually harmonize their views with the views of the European common foreign and security policy."

"It's still their responsibility, that is being regularly monitored," said the spokesperson of EU High Representative Catherine Ashton, pointing to the recent annual report of the European Commission on the progress of candidates for membership from the Western Balkans.

Asked to explain "whether what was announced yesterday in Belgrade will jeopardize Serbia's negotiations for membership in the EU," she said that the EU "expects this harmonization to increase, and we sent a very clear call to all third countries, including the candidates and the countries of the Western Balkans to support our actions."

"But in the end," concluded the spokesperson, "it depends on their governments."
