Minister denies rift in ruling SNS party

"We don't care about having power just for the sake of having power," he said, and added that "only those media hostile to the Progressives" carry articles about the alleged internal turmoil.

The SNS has sent a clear message that it puts Serbia and interests of its citizens ahead of partisan and personal interests, said Gašić, and stressed that the decision that no party member can hold more than one paid public office "shows a high degree of partisan responsibility."

"No, I do not expect any turbulence in the party because of it. All members of the SNS are aware that for Serbia, this is one of the greatest opportunities that it has had in the past 20 years to emerge on a normal road - the road of an ordered society and regulated state, beautiful for living, and that only the strength and energy to carry it out is had by one man inside of him - by party leader Aleksandar Vučić" - said Gašić.

He added that "it is normal practice to replace people who did not respond to the task," and repeated that the reports about a rift in the party were tantamount to "spinning," and, "absolutely not true."

"It is normal that we want young forces, people who have enthusiasm, heart and strength to change Serbia for the better through party activities or in some other functions. The process of hiring along partisan lines must end one day, and experts and competent people must be allowed to have appropriate jobs," said Gašić.

He announced that the party will analyze the situation and determine which of its officials held more than one paid office, and then bring "other people to these positions, thus showing a higher degree of responsibility."

That, Gašić said, means that the positions will be open to the most qualified people from the party, but also to those not affiliated with political parties, and those from other parties - and that this process "should be completed by the middle of September."
