Arrests in north Kosovo "causing unease"

The minister without portfolio in charge of Kosovo told RTS that Ivanović remains a candidate, regardless of being in custody.

Vulin noted that EULEX also arrested retired colonel of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Dragoljub Delibašić, who is charged with the same offenses as Ivanović, adding that all of that was "causing unease" in Kosovska Mitrovica. He said that the Serbian government was "undertaking everything that was in its power."

"We request from the international community to simply respect its own rules, which means that it should have the same attitude towards Serbs as toward anyone else," said Vulin.

According to him, the arrest Ivanovic does not affect the regularity of repeat elections in Kosovska Mitrovica formally, "but it does in the political sense." According to this official, All Souls' Day - which will be marked on February 23 when elections are scheduled to take place - "could affect the turnout as half of all residents of Kosovska Mitrovica will be absent."

Vulin then expressed his belief that "Serbs will not let allow that a Serb mayor is not elected," and added that Citizens' Initiative Srpska candidate Goran Rakić was "excellent," and will "contribute to the development of Kosovska Mitrovica."

Speaking about early parliamentary elections for the Serbian parliament that will be held on March 16, Vulin said that there was "a good model from last time," that he had spoken with representatives of the OSCE, and that "there are no obstacles."

"We'll see if Priština will try to create obstacles, but as far as the international community is concerned, elections are ready, as far as the government of Serbia is concerned, they can start tomorrow," said Vulin, adding that there was "willingness on all sides" and that he "did not expect any problems" when it came to Serbs in Kosovo voting in those elections.
