BELGRADE The Independent Association of Journalists of Serbia (NUNS) has welcomed the arrests of former members of the DB Ratko Romic and Milan Radonjic. They are suspected of involvement in the murder of journalist and publisher Slavko Curuvija. Association urges authorities to discover who gave orders In a statement on Tuesday, NUNS said that the arrests raised the possibility that a trial would determine the perpetrators of this heinous crime. However, this association said that it considers it even more important to find out who gave the order, especially given the fact that the state security was a service for whose operation the state was directly responsible. "We are convinced that it is of crucial importance for the future of democracy in Serbia to permanently prevent such illegal and criminal linking of political structures and security services," said NUNS, adding that killings of journalists represented a great burden for the democratic development of Serbia's society. According NUNS, discovering the truth about the murders of journalists Slavko Curuvija, Dada Vujasinovic, and Milan Pantic, would remove an important obstacle to this development. The statement also said that the association "believes that years of pressure exerted by journalists and journalist associations on the ruling structures also contributed to the progress in the investigation."
