BELGRADE The Helsinki Committee for Human Rights expressed its deep concern over "the frequent inappropriate public statements of Russian Ambassador Aleksandr Chepurin." "These are statement that directly interfere in the internal affairs of Serbia. It is indicative that the ambassador intensified his public activities precisely ahead of the announced first Intergovernmental Conference between Serbia and the EU." Helsinki Committee criticizes Russian ambassador "The opening of the EU accession process puts Serbia in the geopolitical environment to which it belongs," said in an open letter, sent to the Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The ambassador's statements about Kosovo are "disparaging the application of the Brussels agreement and the process of normalization of relations between Belgrade and Pristina," the Helsinki Committee further said. "The most obvious example of interference in the sovereign decisions of Serbia is his claim that Russia's red line that Serbia must not cross is its accession to NATO. It is particularly unacceptable that Ambassador Chepurin is sending offensive messages to countries in the region and their statesmen from Belgrade. It is not only about Turkey, but is primarily about Montenegro," the letter said, and added that "the formulations used on this occasion are not only undiplomatic, but absolutely arrogant and unacceptable," and that such statements could lead to "a serious perturbation of the public in Serbia." "We are aware that Russia is an important partner of Serbia, especially in the energy sphere, but that does not mean that it is allowed to exert pressure, especially when it comes to strategic decisions." The Helsinki Committee requested from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to consider whether the conduct of the Russian ambassador was in accordance with the rules of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, "Article 41."
