BELGRADE Prime Minister Ivica Dacic has said that the state "must put asylum seekers somewhere until the issue has been resolved in accordance with the procedure." He emphasized that Serbia was "a modern country and is fulfilling its international obligations towards asylum seekers." PM says asylum seekers "must be put somewhere" "We need to temporarily solve the problem. We cannot escape the fact that there are thousands of asylum seekers who are in our country," Dacic, who is also interior minister, told reporters after he attended a police drill near Belgrade. He said that Serbia has the capacity to take on less than 1,000 asylum seekers, arguing that "procedures must be followed." "We do not have the capacity to do this. Until we build the capacity, they need to have accommodation somewhere. Of course, if you were to ask somebody 'where,' probably no one would allow them to go anywhere, but they must be sent somewhere," the prime minister was quoted as saying. His comments came as a group of locals in Obrenovac, near Belgrade, blocked a road and two buses carrying asylum seekers. The Serbian government previously decided that a facility in Obrenovac would be used for their temporary housing, until a former military complex has been repurposed. However, residents of nearby villages staged a protests against their arrival today. But the prime minister noted that Serbia has to fulfill its international obligations. Dacic also "asked if anyone could offer an alternative." "Serbia is part of the modern world, this is not a racist country. They need to be given accommodation, and their status must be urgently resolved, for them to return to the countries where they came from." Most of the asylum seekers come from Asian and African countries, and are in Serbia hoping to reach western Europe.
