BUDVA Branko Ruzic has said that "civil society plays an important role in the process of Serbia's accession to the European Union." Serbia's minister without portfolio responsible for EU integration spoke during the 2013 Congress of European movements and civil societies of South East Europe in Budva, Montenegro. "Civil society’s corrective action vital on EU path" Civil society is one of the pillars in the process of European integration, Ruzic said at the gathering in the Montenegrin coastal town. He pointed out that civil society should help the governments avoid mistakes on the road to the EU, adding that the most important thing is to make sure there is a mechanism enabling the voice of non-governmental organizations to be heard. Ruzic said that civil society’s corrective action is essential in the process of Serbia’s European integration. The main topic of the congress in Budva, organized by the European Movement International and the European Movement in Montenegro, is strengthening civil society in the EU candidate and potential candidate countries. The congress brings together representatives of the governmental and non-governmental sectors in the countries of the region and by representatives of European institutions. According to the organizers, the aim of the congress is to strengthen the role of civil society in areas such as education and public debate and to urge for greater support from the EU for the development of civil society.
