BELGRADE An MP from the ranks of the opposition Liberal-Democrats has asked the government "to say what is happening when it comes to the building of South Stream." Speaking during question time in the Serbian parliament on Tuesday, Judita Popovic inquired whether Serbia had become "a colony of a foreign, state-owned company." LDP MP wonders if Serbia is "foreign company's colony" She noted that state officials had met with Gazprom CEO Alexey Miller and asked "what is it that is being negotiated and agreed on in a non-transparent manner." She then asked whether "some conditions" were being placed before Serbia related to the natural gas pipeline. "This meeting was scheduled and held after what happened in Russia, where Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic went on a visit. Has Serbia became a colony of a foreign state or a colony of a foreign state-owned company," Popovic asked. The LDP MP also asked the government "whether the construction of South Stream will start at the end of the month, or if it will be just another ceremony." She wished to know whether the government and the Ministry of Energy "had the capacity and the political will to turn the whole arrangement in Serbia's favor, or if it will remain the way it is, detrimental to Serbia and its economy." Serbian MPs have a right to ask the government their questions at the start of sessions held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, while ministers are in parliament on the last Thursday of each month, when they provide their answers.
