BELGRADE A session of the Serbian government planned for Monday in order to discuss the economic situation in the country has been canceled. The government media office released a short statement without giving any reasons for the cancellation. Later in the day, another statement from the government said the session would be held on Tuesday. PM Ivica Dacic, his first deputy Aleksandar Vucic, and Finance and Economy Minister Mladjan Dinkic met on Sunday to discuss a strategy for introducing spending cuts, but failed to reach any agreement. These meetings will continue in the coming days, according to media reports. The top government officials, however, managed to agree to leave the issue of a possible cabinet reshuffle or early elections for after the EU announces whether it would give Serbia a date for the start of accession talks. The government was supposed to meet today to discuss economic measures that must be implemented in order to decrease the budget deficit. The Nase Novine daily reported that Sunday's meeting was marked by strong disagreements, especially when it comes to cutting down public sector salaries, and the fate of public companies undergoing restructuring. The Vecernje Novosti newspaper is writing today that the three officials agreed not to reduce social givings and pensions, but that there are still "different proposals" about which public sector salaries to cut down.
