WASHINGTON Serbia’s Prime Minister Ivica Dacic said after a meeting with U.S. Vice President Joseph Biden on Wednesday that the U.S. supported Serbia’s EU integration. He said that Belgrade’s position was significantly stronger after the Brussels agreement. “U.S. supports Serbia’s EU pathway” “Biden even said that it was important for Europe’s stability that Serbia is a part of the EU and that it was in everybody’s security and political interest to be a part of the EU integrations,” Dacic told Serbian reporters after the meeting. According to the prime minister, if the agreement with Pristina is implemented on time, the U.S. will use its international influence to persuade EU member states to grant Serbia a date for the start of the EU accession negotiations. He confirmed that he would travel to Brussels on May 21 and meet with Kosovo PM Hashim Thaci and EU High Representative Catherine Ashton. Dacic said that the main topic of the meeting would be the implementation of the agreement but stressed that topics that were not a part of the agreement must not be on the meeting’s agenda. When asked to comment on announcements that the EU could come up with its own implementation plan if Belgrade and Pristina failed to reach an agreement, the PM said that “it has not been customary so far to come up with some plan that has not been discussed”. “We will consider the whole situation and our state delegation will be united as always,” he added and stressed that he would meet with President Tomislav Nikolic and First Deputy PM Aleksandar Vucic before the meeting in Brussels. “We need to make sure that some issues that have not been previously discussed are not opened during the implementation,” Dacic said. He stressed he was optimistic even though it would be very hard to find a solution. The prime minister said that the return of displaced persons, private and state property and position of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) and Serbian monuments in Kosovo would be discussed at the meeting in Brussels.
