SNS ahead of Democrats, Socialists in new polls

If parliamentary elections were held right now, the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) would win by a wide margin, two new polls have shown.

BELGRADE If parliamentary elections were held right now, the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) would win by a wide margin, two new polls have shown. The Progressive are ahead of the Democratic Party (DS) and the Socialist Party of Serbia, Party of United Pensioners of Serbia and United Serbia (SPS-PUPS-JS) coalition, Belgrade press reported on Friday quoting results of the two public opinion polls. SNS ahead of Democrats, Socialists in new polls According to preliminary polling done by the Faktor Plus agency, the SNS would receive support from 38.6 percent of the voters, the DS from 14.8 percent, and the SPS-PUPS-JS coalition from 13.6 percent, the daily Informer reports. The Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) would also cross the election threshold with 7.1 percent of the votes, while the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and the United Regions of Serbia (URS), each at 4.9 percent, could not be certain of a place in the parliament. If Rasim Ljajic's Social Democratic Party of Serbia (SDPS), which has the support of 2.1 percent of the respondents, joined forces with the SNS, the coalition would win 119 seats in the parliament and would only need support from ethnic minority MPs to form a ruling majority, writes the paper. Another survey, conducted in March by Strategic Marketing and reported by daily Blic, found that if elections were held Sunday, the SNS would win 43 percent of the vote, the DS 17, and the coalition around the SPS 15 percent. The LDP and the DSS would both cross the threshold with five percent. In the same poll, First Deputy Prime Minister and SNS leader Aleksandar Vucic was the best rated politician, with 48 percent of respondents saying they have a positive opinion of him (compared to 22 percent with a negative opinion), ahead of Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic (35 percent positive, 22 percent negative). Trailing behind them are United Serbia (JS) leader Dragan Markovic (34 percent positive, 34 percent negative) and Serbian Prime Minister and SPS leader Ivica Dacic (32 percent positive, 31 percent negative). According to the poll, 47 percent of people think unemployment is the biggest problem in the country. Serbia is on the right track, agreed 43 percent, while 37 disagreed. At a referendum, 48 percent would vote in favor of EU accession, and 29 percent against. Only seven percent of the people polled have a positive opinion of EU High Representative Catherine Ashton, the facilitator in the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue, while 59 percent have a negative opinion.
