MINSK Serbia and Belarus will attempt to build a foundation for much stronger cooperation than they have had in the past. This was announced by the two countries' presidents, Alexander Lukashenko and Tomislav Nikolic, after their meeting in Minsk on Tuesday. "Serbia and Belarus to improve cooperation" Nikolic, who started his two-day visit, thanked Lukashenko on the opportunity to visit Belarus in his first year in office. "We will attempt to build a foundation for a completely new form of much improved cooperation than we have had in the past," Nikolic told a joint news conference after his meeting with Lukashenko. Nikolic said that with the visit to Belarus, he wants to show Serbia will remain on the same path it has been on for decades - "the path of cooperation with the entire world." "It is our great desire to join the EU and we will do everything that a sovereign, independent and proud country can do," said Nikolic, noting that "no one can dictate who our friends are across the world." He noted that Serbia "counts Belarus among its greatest friends" and thanked the country on its support to Serbia's fight for the preservation of territorial integrity and sovereignty in Kosovo. "You can count on us to cooperate much more, as friends, so that our two peoples will also live much better," said Nikolic. Lukashenko stressed the historic significance of his meeting with Nikolic at this moment, in the context of the fact a Serbian head of state had not visited Belarus for the past 17 years. "I think a lot has been missed in our relations, but President Nikolic and I are determined and we will strive to elevate our relations to the highest possible level. We are convinced we will be able to achieve this as early as this year," said Lukashenko. He said they decided on the outlines of future steps and agreed that the two countries' foreign ministers will meet this summer to define the framework for cooperation for next year. "In the fall, an intergovernmental commission for trade and economic cooperation will meet to review the results of Serbian-Belarusian cooperation in greater depth, and late this or early next year the two presidents would meet again," said Lukashenko. The Belarus leader thanked Nikolic "on the courage he exhibited by coming to his country under the present circumstances". Nikolic and Lukashenko in Minsk on Tuesday (Beta/AP) Tanjug
