NOVI SAD Dairy farmers held a protest in front of the Vojvodina Executive Council headquarters on Sunday and spilled dozens of liters of milk on the street. The farmers blame the Vojvodina Executive Council for the aflatoxin affair. Dairy farmers hold protest in Novi Sad The Democratic Party (DS) has released that the protest represented a manipulation of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS). However, the dairy farmers say nobody is behind the protest and that they gathered spontaneously. The farmers condemned Vojvodina’s Agriculture Secretary Goran Jesic’s statement that citizens should not let their children drink milk and stressed that the milk was safe and that their children drank it. The protesters said that the milk affair was being used for political purposes and that milk had always contained certain amounts of aflatoxin but that the problem occurred when the regulations changed and the allowed amount of aflatoxin had been reduced from 0.5 to 0.05 micrograms per liter. According to the farmers, the entire affair represents an attack on dairy farmers and the number of dairy cows will inevitably be reduced. Vojvodina’s Economy Secretary Miroslav Vasin invited a delegation of dairy farmers to a meeting. However, the farmers rejected the invitation. Jesic came when most of the farmers had already left and addressed the remaining protesters. “The Executive Council has asked the government to find a way to force dairies to buy milk from farmers,” he said, adding that he supported all protests of farmers, although he did not know who had organized this one. The DS said that the protest was a “blatant political manipulation organized by the SNS” aimed at covering up the affair. (Tanjug) Beta Tanjug
