BELGRADE A case of a controversial memorial in the southern town of Presevo could soon be solved in talks with western ambassadors, daily Danas writes. The ambassadors of the U.S., Great Britain, EU and OSCE will speak to the Belgrade authorities and representatives of ethnic Albanians in the south in order to find a compromise for the monument to members of the so-called Liberation Army of Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja (UCPMB). "Ambassadors seek solution for terror group memorial" However, political leaders of Albanians in the south claim that there will be no negotiations with Belgrade regarding the removal of the memorial. When asked how Albanians would react if the monument was removed by force, some Albanians from the south said there would be “mass protests” while others noted that Serbian monuments in Kosovo would be targeted as a reaction. According to analysts from the south, this could harm the fragile relations between the Serbs and ethnic Albanians in the area and in Kosovo. Former UCPMB commander Lulzim Ibishi has denied that he threatened Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Dacic with at an armed conflict if the monument was removed. “All that is an irresponsible improvisation of a frivolous journalist and I have nothing to do with it. This will be a matter for possible court proceeding because I have never made such a statement,” Ibishi said. Commenting on announcements that the Serbian authorities would tear down the monument if the Albanians did not remove it themselves, he said that “Dacic first needs to get an approval from Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci”.
