BELGRADE The Serbian Army (VS) Air Force is marking 100 years since it was founded, while the Air Defense branch's missile units are celebrating their 50th anniversary. In a ceremony in Belgrade, Defense Minister Aleksandar Vucic stated that Serbia "has a future because its military was not a threat to anyone", but rather "acted with clear intentions and in line with the Constitution in protecting the country's sky and sovereignty". Serbian Air Force marks 100th anniversary "The people who have such an armed force have something to be proud about," he said. In reference to NATO's war against Serbia, Vucic stated that in preparing his speech, his team "wondered whether to mention the pilots who were killed in 1999 while defending the country". "Would that be popular? How would people in Serbia and outside of it react? The people who defended our skies in 1999 are our pride, not shame. Those are the people that future generations will look up to, as well as children when they consider who protected freedom and kept Serbia safe," Vucic noted. It is "our obligation to remember their deeds, as well as the deeds of all the other soldiers who died defending their country," he pointed out. "Those are our heroes, who we will never abandon and will always be proud of," Vucic stated. The ceremony late on Monday in Belgrade was attended by President Tomislav Nikolic, Parliament Speaker Nebojsa Stefanovic, other officials, army chief Lt. Gen. Ljubisa Dikovic, and dignitaries of the Serbian Orthodox Church. (Beta) Beta Tanjug
