BELGRADE Borislav Stefanovic was chosen on Monday to be the new whip of the opposition Democratic Party (DS) in the Serbian parliament. Stefanovic confirmed this to reporters after a meeting of the DS parliamentary club which was attended by the party leader, Dragan Djilas. Opposition Democrats have new MP group chief The new deputy whip is Janko Veselinovic. Earlier today the previous head of the DS MP group, Dragoljub Micunovic, said he would resign from the position, which he accepted for a limited period when the new legislature was constituted in June. He added that he would remain "an active MP", and also work "on program documents" at the DS Political Council. Stefanovic said in a statement after his appointment that the party passed through "a relatively difficult period", but that "things have now stabilized and consolidated". Until May of this year, the DS was the ruling party, while its former leader, Boris Tadic, was the country's president for two terms. Addressing the issue of the parliamentary mandate of Vuk Jeremic - who is currently serving as UN General Assembly president in New York - Stefanovic said that it was "not controversial" as Jeremic "owns the mandate and can return to the MP club" once his stint at the UN has been completed.
