A total of 59,411 persons have requested political asylum in Germany in 2012. Most of them were citizens of Serbia (8,163), Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq and Macedonia. Only 646 persons were granted asylum and 7,268 received protection from persecution. None of them were Serbian citizens. German Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich has stated that the number of asylum seekers from Serbia and Macedonia has dropped thanks to measures taken by the Federal Migration and Refugee Office. A procedure for asylum requests of Serbian and Macedonian citizens has been shortened to just ten days. Financial aid during the procedure has therefore been significantly reduced, causing fewer people to request asylum in Germany. Friedrich proposed last month that the EU seriously considers a possibility to reintroduce visas for Serbian and Macedonian citizens. (Tanjug, file) Beta
