Ombudsman: Interception of communication is dangerous

Serbian Ombudsman Saša Janković has warned that it is dangerous and worrisome if the communication of the president and the deputy PM could be intercepted.

BELGRADE Serbian Ombudsman Sasa Jankovic has warned that it is dangerous and worrisome if the communication of the president and the deputy PM could be intercepted. “I am convinced that those who did that would be promptly identified and adequately punished,” Jankovic said, referring to the wiretapping of Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic and First Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic. Ombudsman: Interception of communication is dangerous In a statement to Tanjug, the ombudsman said that the wiretapping of Serbia's top officials is "a deeply disturbing incident, which has not happened in Serbia for the first time." He voiced hope that the latest case will serve as a trigger for introducing strict rules on the basis of laws related to the interception of communication, which would prevent possible abuses. Jankovic said that three months ago, the offices of the ombudsman and the commissioner for information of public importance and personal data protection presented measures aimed at preventing unlawful wiretapping. One of the measures envisages the establishment of a national center under strict control which would provide services to all, but in line with the law, the Serbian ombudsman explained.
