PM Ivica Dačić says Serbia respects Montenegro's independence and that he would strive to keep the relations between the two countries at the highest level.

PODGORICA PM Ivica Dacic says Serbia respects Montenegro's independence and that he would strive to keep the relations between the two countries at the highest level. "I respect the decision on Montenegro's independence. It is in our interest to have good relations and everyone has their own choice. With other countries in the region as well, we need to seek common ground and have our closeness be our strength instead of our weakness," he told Montenegrin state television. PM: Serbia respect Montenegro's independence Asked what his first move as prime minister will be in relations with Montenegro, Dacic said he was not starting anew but continuing a job done well. "Our relations will certainly not deteriorate, because we have no interest in worsening ties in the region. I am a practical man, and as prime minister, I will strive to see how something can be achieved instead of making excuses why it cannot be done," he noted. Dacic said he would continue cooperation with the new Montenegrin prime minister, whoever he may be after the elections set for October. "We should always start from the things that bring us together, which is the closeness of the people on both sides of the border, and shared European goals," said the Serbian prime minister. On Thursday, Dacic met with Montenegrin Interior Minister Ivan Brajovic in Sarajevo on the sidelines of an international conference dedicated to fighting cyber crime.
