Kosovo Albanian political analyst Azem Vllasi believes the Belgrade-Pristina relations will remain the same after the forming of the new Serbian government. “I other words, neither positive steps toward normalization of mutual relations can be expected nor their significant deterioration,” he told Novi Sad-based daily Dnevnik. Analyst: Belgrade-Pristina relations will remain unchanged According to Vllasi, it is certain that PM-designate Ivica Dacic wants to continue the policy toward Kosovo that he inherited from Slobodan Milosevic. He added that Dacic had never distanced himself from the policy and that he had won a good part of the votes in the recent elections thanks to the “hard rhetoric”. “But circumstances are significantly different now than compared to the 90s. A new factual state was created after 1999 which was formalized on February 17, 2008 and it was additionally confirmed with the opinion of the International Court of Justice in The Hague and Dacic will have to act in accordance with those facts, no matter what he may think about it,” Vllasi was quoted as saying. He believes that there will be no serious incidents or tensions, “despite the fact that extremists see potential defenders of their intentions and actions in (President Tomislav) Nikolic and Dacic”. “Extremists will not be tolerated in the territory of Kosovo, whether they are Serbs or Albanians. Anyhow, recent incidents at the Merdare crossing and in Gracanica show that the ‘patriotism of the fans’ harms Serbia the most,” Vllasi noted. He expressed doubts about raising the Belgrade-Pristina talks to a higher level, because “there has been no use from the technical dialogue since the so-called agreements are not implemented”. “But the technical dialogue should certainly continue and it should focus on everyday interests of the citizens of Kosovo and Serbia, and I primarily mean free flow of people and goods. Serbia has full right to care for the position of the Serbs in Kosovo and to help them in order to improve their standard of living but it is pointless to continue to encourage them to build barricades,” Vllasi concluded.
