If enough EU member states request Berlin not to block Serbia’s EU candidate status, Germany will probably give up on its requests, daily Politika has learned. The next two or three weeks will be decisive for continuation of Serbia’s EU integration process, the daily writes. Daily: Germany may change stance on Serbia The decision should be made at the General Affairs Council meeting on February 28 but the final decision will be adopted in March. Bearing in mind that consultations about the EU candidate status will follow in the upcoming days it is still early to make any prognosis, Politika points out. The daily has learned from a source in Brussels that the issue of Serbia’s EU candidate status is somewhat of an “exotic topic” in Europe since it concerns a “very small circle of people”. The source also added that there had been several media reports that pointed out that Germany should not block Serbia’s EU candidacy anymore. “If there is a sufficient number of EU member states that will tell the Germans not to do this, they will not want to remain alone in this,” the source was quoted as saying. The decision should be made at the General Affairs Council meeting on February 28 but the final decision will be adopted in March.

Bearing in mind that consultations about the EU candidate status will follow in the upcoming days it is still early to make any prognosis, Politika points out.
