Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) leader Cedomir Jovanovic says Belgrade "launched a campaign of definite departure from the European integration course”. He added that the authorities were now “fabricating alleged unacceptable requests by the EU." EU course “abandoned” after December 9 In a written statement delivered to the media, Jovanovic stated there were no new requests from the EU, adding that conditions for candidacy were set out long time ago, and that German Chancellor Angela Merkel had laid them down in August 2011 when she visited Belgrade. "It is selfish to seek the reasons for their own political failure by making up some alleged unacceptable EU demands, and to use as an alibi for the obvious failure of the policy of EU integration some excuses and arguments shifting about fabricated new conditions and obstacles from Europe, which the government, allegedly opposed patriotically ahead of December 9," he said. According to him, those who did not manage to help the country obtain the candidate status should say this clearly to the citizens and give them opportunity to decide at the elections on the future policy of Serbia, especially towards the EU and Kosovo. Jovanovic also said that the citizens should be given the possibility to decide between the options they are given - "Kosovo-European phrases and the red lines, or a clear European policy of speedy reforms, complete U-turn and a fair dealing with all the problems." The LDP leader believes that Europe has been "a buzzword for the authorities who had promised Europeanization of the country and a speedy EU membership to the citizens, but now it became an alibi for failure." "Because of that, we are a country without the EU candidacy, which spent all loans and time, and a society with the highest rate of unemployment, inflation, pace of borrowing, with the most inefficient education, health care, pension and social system in Europe," Jovanovic concluded.
