Serbia's top officials are backing Serbian President Boris Tadic’s decision to call on Kosovo Serbs to remove barricades, team chief Borislav Stefanovic says. “All the while we have been saying the roadblocks are not a goal in themselves, but only a means to find a political solution,” Stefanovic told Belgrade-based daily Blic. “Top officials support Tadic’s call” He added, however, that the roadblocks that were causing escalation of violence, rather than facilitating any solution, had only done service to Pristina and extremists among the Serbs in the north of the province. “They do not want a solution. They only incite tension among the citizens for the sake of their own interests. Now that KFOR wants to remove the roadblocks by force, the state finds that the most important thing is to preserve human lives,” the team chief was quoted as saying. Asked how the Kosovo Serbs might respond to Tadic's appeal, Stefanovic said that the state “should find a solution for them to accept the president's message in a reasonable way. The state is really in a difficult situation.” “Our memories about missed opportunities are still fresh. Serbs from Croatia and Bosnia took no heed of the official position of Serbia and that turned out to be a very bad choice, he noted. Asked whether the state was considering accepting the Ahtisaari plan, Stefanovic said “absolutely not, if offered in its entirety. Even though it has certain positive elements, the plan has not been accepted because it implies Kosovo's independence.” Borislav Stefanovic (Tanjug)
