The Serbian parliament finished late Tuesday a debate in principle on the proposed solutions for the bill on rehabilitation. It opened a discussion on the amendments to laws on emergency situations and the police. Parliament ends debate on new rehabilitation bill All ruling parties announced they will support legal solutions for the rehabilitation bill, pointing out that the act should correct historical injustices and provide material and moral satisfaction to the victims and their descendants, whereas the Serbian Renewal Movement (SPO) went a step further by demanding that secret files be opened and lustration carried out. Opposition parties, however, criticized the proposed solutions. The Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) MPs said the act was not sufficiently precise and proposed that the right to rehabilitation, when it comes to members of the occupation forces, be given only to Serbian citizens who were forcibly conscripted for the occupation forces, but only if they did not commit any crimes. The New Serbia (NS) said that the solutions were disharmonic and that they could further exacerbate the problems, while the Serb Radical Party (SRS) believes the act was being adopted just to please the EU, and not the citizens. SNS and NS MPs returned to the parliament hall on Tuesday, while Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) and Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) MPs are still boycotting the work of the plenum. (FoNet, file)
