UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) on Monday to continue cooperation with the United Nations. Director -General of the UN Office at Geneva Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, who read Ban's message, said the NAM conference in Belgrade is historic and serves to get the movement's ideas from 50 years ago up and running and promote their fundamental values, above all the protection of human rights. We want peace and justice for a better world, Tokayev said at the opening ceremony of the NAM conference in Belgrade, pointing out the UN is using preventive diplomacy to save lives in the face of conflict around the world. Tokayev said the world is facing multiple crisis right now, such as poverty, climate change and the like, whose negative consequences will be most felt in least developed countries. He said NAM solves problems of this nature through political means, with the ultimate goal of building a basis for an intercultural environment and bridging ethnic and religious differences.
