Zuroff: Kepiro's acquittal is insult to victims

Director of the Simon Wiesenthal Center Efraim Zuroff says the acquittal of former WW2 fascist Hungarian police Sandor Kepiro, 97, was an insult to the victims. In the first-degree proceedings, the Higher Court in Budapest delivered a not-guilty verdict on Monday. Kepiro was charged with committing war crimes against Serbs, Jews, and Roma during the infamous raid in Novi Sad in January 1942. Some 1,200 peiple were murdered by the occupying Hungarian forces in the space of three days. Their bodies were thrown in the Danube in Novi Sad.

"That is absolutely outrageous decision, contrary to the collected evidence," Zuroff told Tanjug news agency.

Zuroff voiced expectation that the prosecutor's office will appeal the verdict, and that it would be altered.

"I expect that, after filing an appeal, the verdict will be different, and I can promise to the citizens of Novi Sad and the Serbian people that I will do everything within my power to change this verdict," Zuroff, who tracked Kepiro down five years ago, concluded.
