European Parliament Rapporteur for Serbia Jelko Kacin says that all measures need to be taken in order to stop the wave of false asylum seekers from Serbia. In an article published in daily Danas, he writes that the Serbian leaders need to make sure that the first great victory on the EU integration path, visa liberalization, does not get repealed. EP rapporteur on visa liberalization, EU integration According to Kacin, the responsibility also lies with the civilian sector and media that need to raise consciousness about the real meaning of the visa liberalization. The EP rapporteur has assessed that parts of political elite in the Western Balkans are still “dreaming about the past instead of bringing closer the future they are running away from”. “Serbia has great potentials and opportunity to become region’s European integration driving force. It is not at the moment. Serbia’s human, political and economic resources have not been used, which is preventing the country from heading full speed toward the EU membership,” he stressed. According to him, “condition of all conditions” for Serbia’s EU integration is extradition of Hague fugitives Ratko Mladic and Goran Hadzic. Kacin stated that a lot of progress had been made, such as beginning of the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue and opening of Vojvodina’s office in Brussels. “Multicultural and economically prosperous Vojvodina is one of Serbia’s strongest cards,” he explained. The EP rapporteur has said that Belgrade has lately been sending mixed messages which are creating an impression that Serbia is currently supporting Republic of Srpska (RS) leadership’s policy which directly leads to isolation and instability.
