EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule says only a stable political environment can help to reach Serbia's ambitious EU integration goals. He underlined that political differences have to be resolved within the existent political process. He warned that an additional progress has to be made with regard to key reforms, adding that Serbia's policy has to be in line with the the country's strategic goal (EU accession), while all the solutions have to be adjusted to the European standards. The clock is ticking, and the EU is watching closely, said the EU commissioner. According to Fule, the European Commission is actively preparing its opinion, the analysis of Serbian answers to the EC questionnaire is completed, and additional technical questions aimed at further clarification of the data submitted in January have already been delivered to Serbia. According to reports, Fule also referred to Serbian opposition SNS party leader Tomislav Nikolic's hunger strike as "incompatible with trends toward EU integration", and said he hoped that Nikolic would abandon this type of protests. According to Beta news agency, Fule said that the strike - which has the goal of forcing early elections in Serbia - was "the wrong approach", while if left in order to use "last resorts", democratic institutions were jeopardized.
