Ruling DS party deputy president Dragan Djilas says elections should be scheduled right after it is known if Serbia will become a candidate for EU membership. Djilas, who is also mayor of Belgrade, commented on the opposition Serb Progressive Party (SNS) leader Tomislav Nikolic's decision to stop taking food and liquids in a bid to force early elections in the country. "No reason for elections right now" "President Tadic has talked with Nikolic four times in the last two months and told him that DS agrees to schedule the elections right after it is known if Serbia will get EU candidate status, but that it cannot accept anything jeopardizing Serbia's path toward the EU," Djilas said. "Elections would jeopardize that path," Djilas told B92 on Monday in Belgrade. According to him, Tadic outlined the DS stance on the elections to Nikolic, namely that they cannot be scheduled before a decision is made regarding Serbia's EU candidate status. "The point of the whole story is that we want to do everything to make sure Serbia gets EU candidate status, this is where we agree. Where we disagree is whether we should schedule elections until December 15, when Serbia's application could be considered... our position is that we should not," Djilas explained.
