Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) leader Vojislav Kostunica has called on the government to consider opposition’s request to call early parliamentary elections. He has called on the government to one more time “seriously consider” the request of a part of the opposition to call early elections. Government “should consider elections” Kostunica stressed that “the elections are Serbia's internal issue and that there is no need to hide behind the EU“. “It is unncessary and and very harmful for the government to hide behind the EU and tie the elections to the EU candidate status, because the elections are Serbia's internal issue and the elections should help us get a responsible government that will pull the country out of the difficult crisis,“ he told Beta news agency. The DSS leader also pointed out that elections in democratic countries were legal means to solve crisis and that time had come in Serbia to call early parliamentary elections because the country was in a deep political and economic crisis. “The government should stop making easy qualifications and understimating hunger strike that SNS (Serbian Progressive Party) leader Tomislav Nikolic has started. A large number of citizens demand elections and that is why it is necessary that the government treats its citizens seriously and responsibly,“ he explained. According to Kostunica, the current Serbian government has made numerous concessions to foreign centers of power and it should now think about fulfilling the request of a significant number of citizens.
