The ruling Democratic Party (DS) said that opposition SNS leader Tomislav Nikolic's hunger strike meant that he had "gone for the blackmail method". A statement issued in Belgrade late on Saturday said this party "did not use strikes to get in power". Democrats react, say "suicide is unchristian" This did not happen "even during the dictatorship of Slobodan Milosevic", said the Democrats. Instead, they "honorably and courageously fought to win in elections even at the cost of ballot rigging". "Why does someone who presents himself as pro-European chooses to blackmail Serbia with their own life," said the party, adding, "should Serbia again be held hostage to someone's policy", and asking "if this is the future promised to the citizens of Serbia". Nikolic's strike came after failed attempts to have those currently in power call early elections, but the Democrats said this "robs democracy of its meaning, considering that it is clear when elections are called". "Does this also rob the struggle of all the hunger-strikers of its meaning, those who did it because of their existential problems, which Nikolic does not have?", the statement wonders, and concludes: "The Democratic Party wishes Nikolic good health, and, as someone who has stressed that he is a believer, reminds him that it is unchristian to attempt to commit suicide". The SNS reacted to the statement describing it as "hypocritical", and saying that they would continue their "fight for a better Serbia, regardless of whether it pleases the Democrats". "If SNS acted today the way the Democratic Party has acted before, the Serbian parliament would be in flames, as well as the state television, while members of the regime would have been left at the mercy of the mob," said the Serb Progressives (SNS).
