PM Mirko Cvetkovic says that the investigation into organ trade should be conducted by the bodies authorized to investigate in all countries linked to the case. Answering the MPs' questions about Council of Europe Rapporteur Dick Marty's report on organ trafficking in Kosovo, he pointed out that human organs were also sold outside of Kosovo and Albania, even outside of Europe. “Fully authorized body should probe organ trade” "That is why the investigation should be conducted by a body which will be able to cooperate with all those countries. We have nothing against EULEX, but our position is that the investigative body would need to have authority which EULEX lacks," the prime minister said. He stressed that the Serbian government would persevere in obtaining an appropriate and acceptable mechanism which would guarantee a thorough investigation carried out in a competent and unbiased manner, pointing out that the Serbian bodies should participate in the process. Cvetkovic and Labor and Social Policy Minister Rasim Ljajic said that the issue of organ trafficking should not be politicized. Ljajic said that Serbia should try to secure the support within the UN for the forming of a mechanism which would enable the case to be brought before court. He added that Serbia opposed the proposition that the investigation be carried out by EULEX, taking into account that the body had no jurisdiction over the investigations conducted in Albania and over the protection of witnesses. Ljajic added, however, that it was acceptable that EULEX be in charge of further processing, whereas the investigation itself should be headed by an international prosecutor. The debate on Dick Marty's report was initiated by the Serbian Radical Party (SRS) whose MPs wanted to know if the Serbian government would hold talks with Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci, and whether it had a clear idea about which bodies and institutions should be in charge of the investigation. The Radicals requested that the Serbian bodies be entrusted with the investigation which should be conducted in cooperation with Albania. Should Albania refuse that, the UN should exert pressure on the country to cooperate, they added. Mirko Cvetkovic (Tanjug, file)
