The implementation of the Law on the Seizure of Property Stemming from Criminal Acts has enabled the authorities to confiscate EUR 250mn. Justice Ministry State Secretary Slobodan Homen said that the law was fully implemented during 2010 and pointed out that this was the key regulation when it came to combat against organized crime, and expressed expectation that at least another EUR 100mn of ill-gotten wealth would be confiscated in 2011. “Serbia confiscated EUR 250mn of ill-gotten gains” “It proved true, as we already surmised, that it is not enough to sentence somebody to prison, but that the authorities need to strike a blow to the very stem of crime, that is the obtaining of illegal profit,” the state secretary underscored. According to him, most of the confiscated property belonged to persons suspected of drug distribution and corruption suspects, but also to persons who dealt in other forms of crime. “The Justice Ministry's data show that the authorities have seized 23 houses, 57 apartments, 11 office spaces, 10 garages, 16 companies, 4 hotels, 5 restaurants, 1 cafe, two-thirds of a union resort in Croatia, a bus station, 2 condos on the Tara Mountain, and 49 hectares of land on the Zlatibor Mountain,” Homen stressed.
