Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac has urged halting of criminal proceedings against persons who avoided conscription, the Defense Ministry said. In a letter to the Justice Ministry and the High Judiciary Council, Sutanovac said the reason for his initiative was to give equal treatment to all persons eligible for conscription. Cases to be dropped against draft dodgers The adoption of relevant legislation has paved the way for halting the proceedings, he said. As parliament has adopted a decision to abolish obligatory military conscription and as military service will be only voluntary as of January 1, the accountability of persons who avoided conscription is considerably reduced, he said. Since April 3, 2010, when the amnesty law went into effect, the Defense Ministry filed 48 charges against persons who avoided conscription, and 41 criminal proceedings are currently underway.
