Gay rights activist joins Socialists

Boris Milicevic says his election to the Main Board of the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) meant "great progress had been made in the political landscape". The gay rights activist also noted and that he would do his best to help members of the LGBT population from his new position. Gay rights activist joins Socialists The former president of the Gay-Straight Alliance, who was elected a member of the Main Board of the Socialists during the weekend SPS party congress, told Tanjug that the SPS program and the party leadership showed willingness to fight for human rights. This included the rights of the LGBT population, he noted, and added he would try to help in this fight. “As the first gay politician in Serbia, I will do everything to help members of the LGBT population from my new position,” said Milicevic, adding that the inclusion of LGBT population in politics was a very important step for establishing the rights of its members in the future. The Socialist Party was formed by Slobodan Milosevic, who was its life-long leader. After holding a firm grip on the country throughout the 1990s, the party was in opposition from Milosevic's ousting in 2000, until it joined the government in 2008.
