Serbia has not been combating bullies and hooligans the right way so far, Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac told B92 in Belgrade on Thursday. “The way for the state to combat violence is by implementing the law and imposing adequate and serious sentences,” he stressed. Defense minister on hooligans, EU integrations The defense minister said that football game between Red Star and Partizan on Saturday would be played for the sake of the citizens who liked sports and not for the sake of hooligans which made vast minority and who should not be allowed to ruin the life in Serbia. He pointed out that it was time to make a step forward because those who had showed the “ugly face of the cheering” at Serbia-Italy match in Genoa and had been in the streets of Belgrade on October 10 throwing stones at police were minority in Serbia. “If we don’t go to games today, we won’t go to theater tomorrow and to movies the day after tomorrow,” Sutanovac stressed. He expects that the state authorities will finish their job and that the judiciary will finally reach appropriate verdicts against those responsible in accordance with global democratic principles because anarchy where everybody can do whatever they want with rocks, guns, torches and Molotov cocktails needs to stop. The defense minister is convinced that the recent violence was politically inspired and motivated and that the investigation will show whether there is some sort of organized crime behind it, who financed it and whether nationalist organizations are against Serbia’s EU path. According to Sutanovac, the same groups that claimed that “breaking shop windows and stealing sneakers is expression of utmost patriotism” are behind the incidents. He suspects that the state knew that Democratic Party (DS) headquarters would be attacked on October 10, when Serbian President Boris Tadic, the government and Serbia’s European path were targeted. The defense minister says that Serbia has enough police officers but that they were only allowed to act repressively if there were conflicts, which resulted in a number of injured policemen. He said he expected Serbia to finish negotiations on framework security agreement with the EU and added that civilian and military missions were just as important, pointing out that Serbia had a civilian mission in Haiti and a military one in Chad. “Our orientation is primarily EU integration and by raising capacity and cooperation in the field of defense we have a higher capacity for the EU integration,” Sutanovac explained. He says that military relations between Serbia and Russia have not matched comprehensive political relations for years and that this must change in the future because Serbia is oriented toward military-technical cooperation with Russia when it comes to defense system. Speaking about cooperation with the Hague Tribunal, the defense minister said that government’s position that those who had been accused of crimes should stand trial was crystal clear. He also pointed out that it still had not been decided when DS assembly would be held and announced that the party would become even more united after the election assembly.
